During the circuit breaker, my heart was stirred to write a song on what we were grappling with as a nation amidst the COVID-19 crisis. The virus affects everyone of us regardless of our race, language, religion, age or social backgrounds. Local or migrant, all of us here in Singapore are fighting the same battle.

The picture was clear to me – there was only one curve which we were trying to flatten, not two. And the solution to overcoming this crisis was even clearer. It would only be possible if every single one of us played our part, to unite as one.

This crisis has brought out the best in us to care for one another. It has also opened up our nation’s eyes and hearts to the conditions which some of our migrant workers are living in. Many of them remain homeless, or stuck in conditions which are uncomfortable or worse, even unacceptable for living. If this crisis did not happen, would we have carried on with our lives, unaware of the dual realities in our society?

This National Day, HeartDriven Music, Project Providence and the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach (AGWO) are collaborating to release this song, ONE, as a rallying cry for every one of us to play our part in whatever capacity we can, as one nation. While we look forward to resuming our normal lives again, let us not forget the life lessons which COVID-19 has taught us. Let us not waste this opportunity to go the extra mile, to reach out in love beyond what is convenient for us.

“Among those who volunteered was an undergraduate who offered to do the illustration for the music video. He brought in more people to help and before long they had a production team for the music video.”
